Dr. Sketchy’s

These are some of the better sketches I did this week when I attended the monthly Dr. Sketchy’s figure drawing group at Story Slam Charlotte. For those of you that don’t know, Dr. Sketchy’s is an organization started by illustrator Molly Crabapple where artists get together to draw models in a lively, burlesque-style atmosphere. The idea started in New York and has been franchised in other cities. Charlotte got it’s own Dr. Sketchy’s just recently and I attended it for the first time this month.

I think it’s still finding its legs a bit. There were some things I didn’t like about it (the lighting was a bit flat and the model wore not only a kimono but a kimono on top of a kimono for the first dozen or so poses which makes it hard to really draw the figure) but I definitely plan to continue going and hope more artists and models find out about it so it can keep itself going.
