Page 49 Notes

Not too much to say about this page except that it’s the final page of this particular scene. The next scene is going to be a pretty short one. Maybe two pages long. Both Nathan and Casey will be in it. There may or may not be a short break before I begin it though as I have some vacation time coming up.

Oh, one thing I do want to say about this page is that the last panel is not a cop out on a technical level. I actually drew the entire bed and the surrounding objects in the room but decided not to ink any of that and went back to my original idea for this panel of having it fade out to white leaving Casey surrounded by emptiness.

Nathan Sorry reviewed on Storming The Tower

Lauren Davis –  a reviewer of webcomics that I’ve read and respected for a while – wrote a really thoughtful and positive review of Nathan Sorry on her blog, Storming The Tower, last week. She really hits on all the things that I’d want someone to get out of reading this story and probably does a better job of explaining it than I do.

Go on over and give it a read.

- Someday we may all look back on this page as the Jump The Shark moment for Nathan Sorry; the page where Brandon Walsh and Dylan McKay joined the cast. This is one of those late breaking entries into the plot that I only thought up a few weeks ago and it’s probably something that I will only use a couple of more times so I’m exaggerating it’s importance to the story right now a little but I like it as a device for getting to the heart of Casey’s conflicted emotions.  I do wonder when I eventually publish this as a book, what the legal implications of using two characters from a TV show in even this type of form is and whether they would have to be excised.

- This is one of the quickest pages I’ve drawn since it’s mostly Casey in the same position on the bed plus Brandon and Dylan who obviously can’t change their positions or expressions. But the lettering took a little longer than usual here. Between trying to properly render the volume and tone of Casey’s voice, the detached voices of Brandon and Dylan and the background noise of Rusty’s voice there was a lot to think through here.

I originally intended the blog portion of this site to be Author’s Notes – some inside information or commentary of some sort as I went along. And that’s what most people that use the Comicpress system use the blog for. So, let’s see if I can keep this up. I’ll try to throw some thoughts down for each page as I go, moving forward.

- I’m not a very dynamic artist (I’d be terrible at drawing a superhero book) but something that’s really hard to do in comics I think is three pages of someone talking on the phone. There’s a pretty strong temptation to start getting tricky with the panels and camera angles. And, it looks like I gave in to that temptation already. Hopefully the bottom middle panel works. The idea of tilting the camera with Casey as she drops back into the bed worked really well in my head and would probably work better in film or video. It might just be confusing here. One thing that helps make this scene more than a phone conversation is that I’m trying to depict Casey’s fragile, over-medicated state of mind. That will maybe become more obvious on the next page.

- As far as panel arrangements. I’ve steered away from over thinking any of that stuff throughout this book. At one point I almost decided to make every panel the same size to make it easier and maybe more web-friendly. But I think the picture frame called for this treatment in this case. It actually illustrates Casey’s last line in the panel above it and Rusty’s dialogue in the panel to the left of it so it does well occupying both spaces at once.

- What I like about this page is that it probably tells you everything you need to know about Casey and Rusty’s relationship. They’ve been together since high school. He was the star of the football team and still longs for those days. And there seems to be a gap in their communication as a couple.

Don’t worry…Another page is coming really soon

What you see up above is just one of my standard title pages for when we begin a new chapter. I have another page in the hopper (a proper page) that will be up Wednesday evening. I wouldn’t leave everyone hanging so long just to give you this page and then another week or so of nothing. And yes, the title of this chapter is a little bit meta. I know it’s been a long wait for new updates. Getting back on track now…
