One of the things that caused my last big delay in cranking out Nathan Sorry pages was that I took some time off to draw an 8 page horror comic for comics writer Christian Sager to be included in an anthology he was putting together. That anthology is now complete and a Kickstarter has just launched to fund the printing. It’s called Canaan Cult Revival and it is a magazine-sized horror comic with stories all written by Christian and all interconnected with shared characters. It involves demonology and exorcism and, by design, it is very adult and scary. Think in terms of the old Warren Publishing horror magazines from the ’70s which pushed the envelope for how scary and explicit you could be in comics. This is not going to be a book for everybody but if you love really scary horror comics then I urge you to check it out.
I’m really proud of the story I drew. It’s in a little bit of a different style from my Nathan Sorry work. I used more of a deep, gray tone wash vs. the one-color halftone affect I use here. I really wanted this to have the feel of both those old ’70s horror comics but also the horror films of that same era, with a quiet sense of dread intercut by some horrific imagery. Below is one of the pages, unlettered.
Please check out our Kickstarter and consider supporting it or share it with friends who may enjoy this type of material. There are some really great artists drawing the other stories and Christian has a very strong vision for it.
