Wednesday is new comics day

For some reason I never thought to double post any of these onto my site here but for the last few months I've been writing a weekly feature on yesbutnobutyes.com called "Wednesday is New Comics Day" where I recommend a new comic that is coming out that week. Maybe I'll start linking to them from here each week, or just posting them here as well.

In the meantime (since today is only Tuesday) here is a link to the full archive of my recommendations:

Wednesday is New Comics Day

This week's comics
Green Lantern:Rebirth #4 Though prone to some wonky sci-fi nonsense, this has been a fun supe-hero story so far with a good amount of drama that has been building up the event of this issue. It's an exciting moment,...

This week's comics
A great week of comics. I loved everything I bought: Vimanarama 1 I loved the beginning, but got a little unsure of this as it moved into the "weird" territory. The first couple of scenes though felt very different, very...

Black Bull River Page 3
Finally finished page 3. Next up: Page 4....

BBR Page 2
I hesitate to say that this, or any of the pages I post for this, are actually finished. Just now I've noticed an anatomical mistake I want to fix, among other things. Anyway, here's page 2, finished in much...

Black Bull River Page 1
Wow, some progress. I did the final pencils for page one! The next step for this page will be inks but I will probably do a couple of more finished pencil pages first. Meanwhile I still need to finish...

Top 10 Comics of 2004
Here's what I think are the most noteworthy comics and graphic novels that came out this year (of what I read of course). On a whole it seemed like a weak year for comics, especially compared to the last few,...

This week's comics: 12/15
Identity Crisis #7 The big finale is a big letdown. This was one of the scenarios I had predicted a while back just based on who the possible suspects could be. Frankly, some of the wild speculation on the...

Comic Review: Daredevil Vol. 9: King of Hell's Kitchen
Daredevil is one of the few interesting books that Marvel is still putting out. In the last couple of years on this book, Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev have taken some real chances with this character. They pretty...

This week's comics: 11/17
Ex Machina #6 Only in this comic could you have a story that seamlessly mixes alien subway tunnel dwellers, gay marriage, school vouchers and 'golden showers'. A new storyline begins this issue and Vaughan and Harris continue to blend...

This Week's Comics: 11/10
Identity Crisis #6 A big issue in this outstanding series. Big developments in both the murder mystery and the mind wiping plot. But there's still a lot to resolve it seems in the upcoming final issue. I can understand if...

Comic Reviews: This week and last weeks
Solo: Tim Sale A great idea from one of the Big Two companies. A series that devotes an entire issue to one artist and gives him the opportunity to play at will with DC characters. Sale is an excellent artist...

Comic Review: Human Target: Final Cut
I'm a big fan of the ongoing "Human Target" series but have never gotten around to reading the graphic novels that preceded the monthly book. Any fan of the series needs to read this book though, not only because...

Comic Review: Daredevil Vol. 7 by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev
As a book on its own, this volume of the Daredevil series relies a lot on what came before and what will come after. It helps to have read the previous volume not so long ago as a number of...

Comic Review: Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol:1
Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar somehow write this one together and somehow the excesses of each is cancelled out by working together. The dialogue is stronger than it generally is in a Millar book but not as ridiculously verbose...

Michael Chabon's Keynote at the Eisner's
Chabon gave an interesting speech at the Eisner Awards with some good recommendations for how comics should reclaim a younger audience. Read it here....

Comic Review: Stray Bullets Vol. 5 by David Lapham
Lapham introduces some new characters in this volume and only time will tell if they turn out to be significant players but already you can see that they are linked in some way to each other and to the characters...

Book Review: X-Statix vol. 2: Good Guys and Bad Guys by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred
(B-)This seems to be about the point where this ongoing title begins to run out of steam. The usual self-referential humor and post-modern superhero storytelling is not as sharp here as it has been in past volumes. This volume is...

Not Funnies
This Sunday's NY Times magazine had a great article by Charles McGrath about comics and 'graphic novels', focusing on the contemporary 'auters': Chris Ware, Daniel Clowes, Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelmen, etc. The usual suspects for the most part. It's a...
