This is one of those shows that when it first started I never would have thought to give it a chance but now that it is on DVD and has received a lot of unexpected praise I decided to give it a try. Shockingly, it is one of the best Sci-fi stories ever to be on TV.
A couple of things to note about this mini-series which kicked off the TV series that I have yet to watch:
- It depicts one of the scariest end of the world scenarios I've seen, this side of Spielberg's War of the Worlds.
- Though hand held camera work is a staple of cop shows these days, I've never seen it used in Sci-fi and the effect varies from being unique and fresh to jarring and making the CGI space battles look like they were filmed with puppets on strings.
- The women steal the show here with the sexy, villainous Cylon Number 6 seducing her way to colonial domination while showing some conflicting feelings for the humans and an odd faith in "god"; Starbuck, the male hero from the original 1970s series is now a cigar chomping, tough talking woman who conveys all the characteristics of the swashbuckling Han Solo type but with an almost girl-next-door female charm; and the President, played by Mary McDonnell, formerly the Secretary of Education who finds her self bumped up the chain of command after all but 50,000 of the human population is decimated by the Cylons. And she must deal with being diagnosed with cancer, to boot.
I'm so looking forward to getting into this series.
