I was a big fan of both of Judd Apatow's short lived, mostly ignored TV shows, "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared". He's had some more success in writing films like "Anchorman" and now he has directed his first film and I think he's finally going to acheive the recognition he deserves.
Of course it helps to have a cast where each one steals the scenes from the other. Steve Carrell finally has the starring role that he deserves and is backed up by the funniest entourage of guys in a movie since "Old School". I especially enjoyed "Undeclared"'s Seth Rogan as Cal. Catherine Keener, who is always great, actually dials down her usual jaded huffiness and is very cute as the love interest here.
This is a laugh out loud film with some crass humor but a lot of heart. It will appeal especially to anyone who has ever been socially or sexually retarded. Or who has obsessively collected anything like comic books or action figures (which always goes hand in hand with the former).
I think you nailed this movie in your review (no pun intended). Funny movie... so funny, I didn't know how badly out of shape my laughing muscles were! Oh, hurt so bad, but it was worth the 2-hour laughfest.
I cna't tell you how much I love this blog. I base the movies that I see on what Rich thinks of them! (LOL) The "HAIR" tribute at the end was priceless. We roared through the entire movie...
