This is a pretty weird film driven along by M. Night Shyamalan's absolute control of the story. He's one of the only directors out there that keeps you involved by not showing you too much. He knows how to creep you out by showing you the image of something, quickly or from a distance, so you can't quite make out what it is. Why other horror filmmakers don't get this, I don't know.
Like his other movies, the plot is also driven by the fact that you know there is going to be a twist at the end. Possiblly Shyamalan should put this device to rest for a while because it distracts you from his other accomplishments - the eerie cinematography, a really strong performance by Bryce Howard - as you try to guess what the twist is going to be.
I figured out half of it in the first 5 minutes but not the whole thing so I wasn't disappointed. I think some people might be put off before they get there by some odd story elements and the odd setting it takes place in. But for me, the odder the better.
