The Aviator: A

I was taken by surprise by this one. An excellent movie from Scorsese. Much more watchable than Gangs of New York I think. And DiCaprio gives an outstanding performance. Even with the Oscar nomination, I don't think he's getting enough credit for this.

Scorsese really did a phenomenal job on this. Love the colorized look of some of the earlier scenes, especially the Cotton Club and the golf course. Like looking at old magazine photos.

This gets my vote for Best Picture (of the movies actually nominated.)

I loved, loved, loooooooved the Aviator. I was surprised it did not win Best Picture. That film really had the goods, you know? It was hitting on all cylinders for all three hours. And I agree with what you say about Leo: I've read some Hughes Biographies and seen footage of him, so I was doubtful DiCaprio could pull it off, but my god, he really did, especially towards the end, at the Senate Hearings.

Hughes had an amazing life. You could make another 3 hour film about his life and not have any overlap.

Hard to believe that you thinking Aviator is a better movie than Gangs of NY. You are losing your credibility (like Ebert circa 1999).
