Book Review: X-Statix vol. 2: Good Guys and Bad Guys by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred »
(A -) Edited by Chris Ware, this anthology is a perfect sampler of the best of today's independant comics. Ware groups each short in a logical way and varies the content nicely with some prose essays and some historical bits as well. There are of course brilliant contributions from Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, Adrian Tomine, Los Bros. Hernandez, and Chris Ware himself. What is great about this book though is that I found a number of stories here that have convinced me to check out fuller works by that creator.
The excerpt from Chester Brown's Louis Riel was haunting in the way it progressed from panel to panel. David Heatley's cartoons about his Dad were touching and weird, making me laugh out loud. Kaz's Underworld comics were a riot.
There are also some nice comics-inspired prose pieces by Ira Glass and Michael Chabon as well as a brilliant introduction by Ware.
As with any anthology there are some misses, but we'll just overlook those.
