I’ve learned in doing these Animal Alphabet drawings that I’m more comfortable and successful when I don’t try to force a jokey situation on the poor animals. I was doing that with the early entries and some of them were not bad but gradually I began to focus more on just drawing the animal and giving it some slight quirks or just letting the natural quirks of my drawing style take over. I think I got a little cocky last week with my tarantula drawing that I thought came out pretty well so I went off the straight path again this week.
This Upside-Down Catfish drawing originally had a family of other fish swimming below UDC. The little kid fish thought UDC was the coolest thing ever but the dad fish was looking disapprovingly on his hijinks. All of that took away from the actual drawing of the real subject here and I wound up cutting them out of the final piece which helped but I still think this turned out to be a disappointing drawing considering that a type of Catfish that always swims upside is an actual thing and there’s probably a lot of really great drawings to be made of one.
