J is for Joe Kavalier
from The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
This was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read and is probably partly responsible for rekindling my interest in comics back in the day after a decade or so of basically forgetting about them. Joe Kavalier – kind of a stand in for Jack Kirby in this work of fiction that at least somewhat resembles the artist/writer relationshiop between Stan Lee and Jack Kirby – is the kind of moody, talented bad ass that a lot of young cartoonists probably imagine themselves being. The bandage on his head is from a night out looking for German-looking guys to take his aggressions about the Jewish plight in WWII Europe out on.
