The coolest thing happened yesterday. Warren Ellis, acclaimed writer of such comics as The Authority and Planetary, mentioned my comic, Nathan Sorry, on his blog:
Rich Barrett is 16pp into a creepy online graphic novel called NATHAN SORRY that looks like it’s going to turn into something fun.
You don’t get better press than that.
This all actually started a couple of months back when Ellis called for webcomic creators to come talk about their work on a thread in his popular Whitechapel forum. I managed to be one of the first into that thread to post. It was a turning point for me in that it was the first time I publicly spoke about Nathan Sorry (aside from various links posted on Twitter). Suddenly I was putting it out there and I got a good amount of traffic over the next couple of days from it. Not to mention some nice write-ups on a few webcomic-related websites. Most importantly though it boosted my confidence and made me realize there was no turning back. Since then I’ve increased my output dramatically and have put out a few more pages.
Now this. Mr. Ellis not only checked out the link I posted on his forum but he liked what he read enough to publicly recommend it. Traffic on NathanSorry.com went up something like 500% yesterday and a number of people signed up to receive email updates. Nathan Sorry is officially out there now and I am looking forward to getting the rest of the story out there.

Two pages in one month. I think that’s officially a record for me. Anyway, a new page is up, continuing the hotel bar scene which will continue for another couple of pages giving us some important information about Pryor’s grand plan, the secret of “James Goode” and what a pathetic sap poor Nathan can be sometimes.

I’ve recently been getting into the microblogging services Tumblr and Posterous. I’ve been wanting to play with both of them for a while but wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do with them. How would these two services differ or complement what I already do with Twitter and this blog?
The answer is that richbarrett.tumblr.com is a place where I’ll be posting art-only teaser images from Nathan Sorry as a way of promoting the comic but also for showing pieces of artwork from it in a different way than it is presented in the comic form.
richbarrett.posterous.com is going to be more about collecting things that inspire or interest me. It will be more of a smorgasbord of stuff that more than likely I didn’t create myself.
The ironic thing is that I’m probably using these two services in ways that go against their strengths or more common uses. Posterous is incredibly powerful for blasting out small pieces of content to various social media outlets. A good use for it is to send out photos or messages from your mobile phone. You send the content to an email address and you can even direct what other services you want to autopost to by altering the email address (twitter@posterous.com or twitter+facebook@posterous.com)
Meanwhile, Tumblr can pull in content from other sources via RSS feeds (which also makes it useful for displaying your own content) but people seem to use it a lot for pulling in cool, funny and inspiring imagery they find throughout the web. Obviously there are plenty of people using it for their own stuff too (including pulling in their own RSS feeds) but my favorite tumblr blogs so far have been ones that collect from various outside sources.
I like the way that Tumblr looks though. Unlike Posterous you can customize the design of your page which makes it a pretty viable site for showcasing your own stuff. As I continue to use it I’ll probably start to create my own custom theme but there are a lot of great looking ones to use right now. Tumblr is also a lot more active right now as far as the social “friending” aspect goes. They’ve brilliantly turned this into a game by giving you a “Tumbularity” score which earns you points based on followers, posts and how often you get “reblogged”. Though Posterous has what they call “subscribers” too, it doesn’t seem as active, or interactive, yet. That said, Posterous is absolutely brilliant in how it works – how it links to other services, how it allows you to track views on your pages, and how damn simple it is. You don’t even need to sign up to start using it. They really do everything right.
I’ve added links in the sidebar to these two microblogs so check them out on occassion. I’m looking forward to playing more with these and hopefully building up content on each.

Just posted the latest page of Nathan Sorry, in which two guys talk in a bar at the Hilton. High octane excitement! Adventure comics! This scene will probably go on like this for a couple more pages but it’s an important (and hopefully interesting) part of the story.
Check it out here and be sure to sign up for email updates whenever a new page is added.

In the past couple of weeks, my webcomic, Nathan Sorry, has received some nice attention from various webcomic-focused websites so I thought I would share those links here.
My whole coming-out-party for Nathan Sorry started when I posted a link to it on this thread on Warren Ellis’ Whitechapel forum. Ellis, a hugely popular comic book writer and novelist called for webcomic creators to post links to their work and I was fortuitous enough to make it onto the first page of that now 15-page thread.
Since then I’ve had some nice writeups on sites like The Webcomics List and ComixTalk (okay it’s the same writeup but on two different sites, whatever). It was also mentioned in this roundup of webcomics from that Whitechapel thread on RGB Filter and just today the guys from RGB Filter talk about Nathan Sorry in the latest installment of their video podcast.

Wow, I’m on a roll now. All the new traffic and great feedback I’ve gotten on my ongoing webcomic Nathan Sorry has helped me keep moving on it and I’ve actually managed to get a new page up in a matter of weeks. Hope to keep the momentum going.
Take a look.

I just wrote an article for the new Email Transmit Info Center blog (which incidentally I also designed). It’s about how to design emails. Read it here.

My design portfolio has been featured on The Design Cubicle in a blog posting about 25 Beautiful One Page Portfolio sites. There’s a lot of great looking websites listed along with mine so I’m honored to be in such good company.
Take a look at the list (mine is the 6th one down).

Rummaging through my archives I thought I’d pull out these illustrations I once did for a children’s book that never quite got off the ground. Fittingly, it was about a sloth. Click below to see some more.

Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so busy with design work, fatherhood and other miscellania so that I could be a little quicker with adding new pages to my ongoing webcomic, Nathan Sorry. I’ve just posted page 13 and hope to keep the momentum going right into page 14.
